High-flier nurtured at Penicuik
A MIDLOTHIAN secondary school is making a big noise about its first dux pupil.
Celebrating its 75th anniversary, Penicuik High School has renamed its science and technology building after Sir James Arnot Hamilton, the man credited with designing the delta wing of the Concorde aircraft.
He became known among civil servants as “Boom” because of his insistence that the public had the right to hear the plane’s sonic boom, emitted when breaking the sound barrier.
Sir James died last year, aged 89, and members of his family attended a ceremony to commemorate his work.
