Lasswade Inn is 'safe as houses'

Pub-goers have been assured that a Lasswade Inn is as safe as houses – despite a reader's fears over its roof.

Regular Advertiser letters page contributor Alex Hutchison from Gorebridge wrote to us to say he felt that the roof of the Melville Inn, next to Dobbies Garden Centre, was "unsafe".

Quirky

But pub bosses insist it is simply a "quirky" design.

Mr Hutchison wrote: "The extreme right section of the roof has a very large dip in the centre. This looks very dangerous.

"On the extreme left, the roof is certainly not in a straight horizontal line, it is up and down all the way.

Gimmick

"Would someone please tell me if this is a gimmick to attract attention or is the roof really sagging so badly?

"I for one will never set a foot in this place – one can almost envisage having a meal when suddenly the rafters land all around you."

Safe

A spokesman for the pub's operator Vintage Inns offered his reassurances: "This is in fact a quirky design feature intended to add a bit of extra character to the building and we can assure guests that it is perfectly safe."
