Lively school debate
A packed council chamber witnessed a fiery meeting on the future of Newbattle High School last week.
While the SNP-led administration was keen to ease concerns on potential closures, the Labour group was quick to criticise this and the consultation process.
Lisa Beattie (SNP), cabinet member for education, said: “I’m aware that there is a worry in the community.
“Can I ask some questions around the consultation process? What is it? Who is it with? Where will it be held? And when will it take place?”
Midlothian Council chief executive Kenneth Lawrie replied that it will be the same consultees used in the first phase, with the consultation process taking place in March and April, and that public meetings will commence weeks beginning April 15 and 26.
A report will then go to council on June 25, with the final report to be submitted by July 12.
