‘Living Wage’ is introduced in Midlothian

Midlothian Council has introduced a minimum ‘Living Wage’ for its staff.

At a recent meeting in Dalkeith, the council agreed the practical details of how this would be achieved.

Workers in pay grades one and two, including cleaners, laundry assistants and cooks, saw their wages rise to at least £7.49 an hour on New Year’s Day.

Council Leader Bob Constable (SNP) said: “We feel that this is the minimum pay rate needed to let workers lead a decent life.”

More than 1300 workers will see their wages rise as a result of this decision. The Living Wage is defined as the minimum income necessary for a worker to meet basic needs such as housing, clothing and nutrition.

It is an informal benchmark, not a legally enforceable minimum level of pay like the national Minimum Wage which is set annually by the Chancellor.

Many of the staff to benefit will be women working part-time.
