Lucy rests up after marathon cycle for charity

PATHHEAD resident Lucy Brooks has been using her free time over the last 10 days to put her feet up after she successfully completed a 218 mile sponsored cycle.

The 19-year-old, who lives at 33 Main Street, cycled from Alnwick to Dundee over a nine day period earlier this month to raise money for DebRA Scotland. The charity promotes research into the cause, nature, treatment and cure of genetic skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB).

The trip finished last Sunday at the Research Institute at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee which is looking into a cure for the condition which can lead to skin falling off at the slightest touch.

There, Lucy, who works at a care home in Leith, was given a guided tour of the Institute along with her twin brother Christopher and dad James (46), who both also took part in the cycle.

Lucy's mum Shelagh (48), who was the support team throughout the trip, said: "The cycle went really well until the last day when James' bike gears seized up and he had to push his bike for a spell but he managed to make it to the finish.

"They were lucky enough to be given a tour of the EB research facilities by Dr Alison Hill, Dr David Russell and Dr Neil Wilson and it was good for Lucy to see what the money raised will be going towards."

Lucy cycled on all nine days of the trip, Christopher on seven days and James on two days and Shelagh added: "Lucy did really well and we were lucky to miss the thunderstorms during our time on the road. We stayed in campsites and hostels which was good fun but everyone enjoyed getting back to home comforts."

The trio have so far raised 1200 for the charity and anyone wanting to donate can call Lucy on 01875 320 150 or visit www.debra.org.uk for more details on the charity.
