Midlothian charity helps greyhounds
MIDLOTHIAN'S first charity dedicated to providing a new home for greyhounds and lurchers has been set up in Lasswade.
Gracehounds, formed earlier this year, was set up by former veterinary nurse Lois Sinclair. The project has grown steadily and was awarded charitable status in November.
The charity finds foster homes for abandoned dogs while making efforts to find them a permanent home.
Dogs often come to the charity after having had unsuccessful racing careers, or having retired due to injury. There can be difficulty providing greyhounds with a new home, as many potential owners overlook the animals at general pet rescue centres due to their quiet demeanour.
Lois, who describes greyhounds as "peaceful" animals who make wonderful pets, said there is a real need for the service in Midlothian, adding: "There used to be racing tracks in Midlothian. Those have all gone, but that does not mean the dogs have too."
Gracehounds provides medical care for fostered dogs and ensures they arrive at their new owners, neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped.
The charity holds an "Agility Sunday" event on the last Sunday of the month at Vogrie Country Park between 11am and 1pm. Visitors can meet some of the dogs and volunteers from Gracehounds. Other dogs are welcome provided they are kept under control and on a lead.
