Midlothian committees not so pretty vacant

VACANCIES on committees have sparked a political fallout within Midlothian Council.

The SNP administration claims that Labour members are declining to fill positions on internal and external groups, undermining the democratic process and placing additional burdens on SNP councillors.

The issue came to a head at last month’s full council meeting when Councillor Margot Russell (Lab) resigned as chair of the general purposes committee, telling members that she required more time to deal with ward commitments.

It had been expected that a fellow Labour member would take her place, but the opposition declined to nominate a candidate from seven eligible members.
