Midlothian Council complaint is not upheld

A COMPLAINT against Midlothian Council has been dismissed by the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman.

A long-running dispute over access to the Brownie House at Vogrie Country Park led to the official complaint being lodged.

Girlguiding Midlothian (GGM) wanted parents and carers to be allowed to use a car park close to the building to pick up their girls at the end of pack holidays.

But safety concerns about vehicles using the route near a busy playground led to the council erecting barriers to block the driveway and the girls, aged as young as seven, were expected to carry up to a week's worth of luggage half a mile in wheelbarrows.

In a report on the Ombudsman's findings Midlothian Council was heavily criticised, however, the complaint - that following an amendment to the organisation's lease in November 2007, the council's administrative handling of their proposed solutions, representations and subsequent complaints was poor - was not upheld.
