Midlothian MP David Hamilton's call over 'trolley rage'
Shoppers are being urged to keep their cool this Christmas, as Midlothian MP David Hamilton backed a campaign to reduce the abuse of retail staff.
The drive has been put forward by retail trade union Usdaw, which in its most recent survey, found two thirds of shop staff have been abused in the past year and nearly 10 per cent have suffered physical assault.
Joining shopworkers at Westminster, Mr Hamilton said: "A major cause is angry customers and reports of "trolley rage" incidents are on the increase."
Describing himself as "shocked" at the statistics, he added: "Christmas shopping can be exciting but stressful. I urge all customers not to take out their frustration on shop staff who have to work hard, often for long hours at this time."
The MP added both verbal abuse and threats are forms of antisocial behaviour and encouraged retailers and police in Midlothian to work together to protect shop staff.
Usdaw general secretary John Hannett said: "Too many customers seem to forget that shop staff have feelings too, and treat then without any respect."
