Midlothian MP’s worries over tax credits
Almost 200 low income families in Midlothian will suffer financially when the UK Government introduces changes to the Working Tax Credit system next month.
From April 6, couples with children who currently work between 16 and 24 hours a week will have to increase their hours to 24 hours a week.
Midlothian MP David Hamilton (Lab) claimed 190 Midlothian families would be affected by the “Tax Credit bombshell”. Unless they increase their hours of work, they face losing £3870 in Tax Credits.
Mr Hamilton said: “The government doesn’t seem to realise that extra hours of work, or alternative jobs are just not available for most people at the moment, because unemployment is so high and many employers are having to cut costs.”
