Midlothian parasite research team off to Africa
A TEAM of Midlothian scientists is to travel to Africa to study plant-based treatments for parasites.
The researchers from the Scottish Agricultural College, based at the Bush Estate, have been awarded a 900,000 grant from a 13 million international development research programme.
The team, led by Dr Jos Houdijk, will travel to Ethiopia to study the effectiveness of the plant-based treatments used by native herdsmen.
Their project has links with similar Scottish work on plants like chicory.
The SAC study on chicory is well-recognised by leading sheep farmers and has shown that stock grazed on chicory have fewer worm problems and grow faster than those grazed on conventional pasture.
