A decision to close council-run toilets in Midlothian has sparked a public outcry.

Midlothian Council intends to close toilets in Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg, Penicuik, Gorebridge and Loanhead.

It is not yet clear when the closures will come into effect, but they aim to save the council up to £117,000 a year.

Rosewell care assistant Christina Young (61) looks after daughter Carol (40), who is paralysed from the neck down and suffers from spina bifida. She said: “Carol has a catheter that needs emptying when we are out shopping. Obviously I need somewhere to go because I cannot do it on the street and don’t want to go into a pub.

“What the council is doing is a disgrace – let them make cuts somewhere else, where the elderly and disabled will not be affected.”

By contrast, in neighbouring East Lothian, the council provides the upkeep of 33 public conveniences, including eight attended toilets that are based in each of the larger towns.

The council regularly receives British Toilet Association ‘Loo of the Year’ awards.
