Midlothian Council concern over national force

Midlothian Council is to take a cautious stance over the formation of a single Scottish police and fire service.

The local authority, which opposes Scottish Government plans for a Scottish Police Service and a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, agreed to not to take an active role – at present – as the reforms begin.

At last week’s full council meeting, the authority also agreed that it was yet to make a decision on how to work with the appointed police local commander and fire service’s local senior officer.

The recently-published Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Bill states that councils will have to formally comment on local policing and fire service plans.

Councils have been invited to join the new local scrutiny and engagement implementation network to support the reforms, either as a pathfinder or networker. Most local authorities, including East Lothian, Edinburgh and Scottish Borders Councils, are considering becoming pathfinders to move the reforms forward.
