People in debt are being urged not to ignore their problem.

Joyce MacLean, who runs the Midlothian centre of Christians Against Poverty, said: “Of all the people we have seen, there is a common thread – the people who have ignored the problems the longest face the most extreme difficulties.”

Her comments come as new research by the charity suggests people in Scotland are finding it hardest to meet essential household bills.

CAP helps people through a growing network of debt centres across Scotland and the rest of the UK, including the one run by Joyce in Penicuik.

People contacting the charity have on average £17,829 of debt, owing £4,766 on their bills and mortgage while average client income is just £13,830.
