Midlothian’s war role is explored

Midlothian Council’s Library Service has teamed up with the Edinburgh’s War project to host a special event, examining the role Midlothian played in the First World War.

The event will take place from 10am to noon at Dalkeith Library on Saturday, February 18. Entry is free and experts from the Edinburgh’s War project will be on hand to answer questions from the audience and to listen to family stories.

People are also invited to bring along any old documents, artefacts or photographs from the war and the visiting historians will be happy to answer any questions you may have about them.

Councillor Peter Boyes, cabinet member responsible for libraries, said: “The First World War had an enormous impact on Midlothian. Large numbers of local people volunteered to join the Forces, and many lost their lives. There was not a street or a village unaffected by the conflict. Many Midlothian people have ancestors who fought in the war, and this event offers a valuable opportunity to learn what they went through.”

Edinburgh’s War is a collaborative venture involving The Centre for the Study of The Two World Wars at the University of Edinburgh, the City of Edinburgh Libraries, the Scottish War Memorials Project, community history groups and local councils, including Midlothian Council.

The project aims to gather and preserve information about the impact of the First World War on Edinburgh and the Lothians. An archive about the project can be found at www.edinburghs-war.ed.ac.uk
