Millerhill waste plan - two to bid

Alauna Renewable Energy and Viridor Waste Management Ltd have reached the final stages in the process of procuring a contractor to run a food waste treatment plant at Millerhill.

The joint project between Midlothian and the City of Edinburgh councils and their private sector partner will deliver state-of-the art treatment services for all the food waste collected from households and businesses by each local authority.

This will increase recycling and energy recovery as well as reducing the amount of waste being sent to landfill, all in line with environmental targets set by the Scottish Government.

Councillor Russell Imrie, Cabinet Member for Strategic Services at Midlothian Council, said: “This announcement takes us another step closer to delivering a better, more sustainable and more efficient waste treatment service as part of a zero waste future for Edinburgh and Midlothian.”

Councillor Robert Aldridge, environment leader at the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “A number of schemes are now underway to radically improve our waste and recycling services. I welcome the progress being made on the Zero Waste project because it is an integral part of our overall waste strategy.”

The two remaining bidders will submit final tenders by the summer, with an announcement on the preferred bidder to be made later in the year.

A separate procurement for residual waste treatment services began in December and further announcements will follow in due course.

In December, Midlothian Council granted planning permission in principle for modern, efficient waste treatment facilities to be built at Millerhill.
