Millions of pounds could become available to community projects if plans for a surface mine in rural Midlothian are shown the green light.

Scottish Coal plans to recover around 10 million tonnes of coal at a proposed site two kilometres south of Rosewell.

An application for detailed planning consent was submitted to Midlothian Council earlier this month and is expected to be decided at a meeting in August.

As well as creating 230 jobs, the development could generate £2.75 million.

This would be via the Midlothian Council-managed Gourlaw Coal Regeneration Fund, which collects 25p – to be used for local environmental improvements – for every tonne of coal extracted from an existing open cast coal mine just outside Rosewell.
