MSP announces boost for paths

MIDLOTHIAN'S MSP was on her high horse when she announced a million pound package to improve Scotland's existing path network.

Rhona Brankin was on horseback at Vogrie Country Park, near Gorebridge, when she confirmed Scottish Natural Heritage was to receive 1.08 million to help ensure the successful implementation of Scotland's new access legislation.

The Deputy Environment Minister was joined by SNH chairman John Markland and Paths for All's Ian Findlay for the announcement.

SNH has agreed to award a grant to the Paths for All partnership over three years from 2006 to build on existing work to develop path networks for walking, cycling, horse riding and all abilities through initiatives between communities and land managers.

Welcoming the funding, Ms Brankin said: "It is important that the people of Scotland are encouraged to enjoy our countryside and to use the access rights responsibly so we can also ensure the long-term protection of our natural heritage and resources.

"Enjoyment of the outdoors can bring a wide range of benefits for the people of Scotland including opportunities for exercise, improved health and well being."

SNH chairman John Markland added: "There is still a great deal of work to be done to ensure implementation of the Act and I am very pleased we are continuing our close association with Paths for All to see that work through."

The partnership will put the money towards it vision where each community has a network of paths that people want and are able to use for recreation and everyday journeys.

The grant will also be used to fund a new technical officer, who will work with access authorities and other agencies to improve techniques in path construction and management.

Paths for All chairman Robert Maud said: "We are delighted with the announcement of this funding package, which we believe demonstrates confidence on behalf of the Executive and SNH in what we have achieved to date and plan to deliver over the next three years for people living in and visiting Scotland."
