MSPs clash over Dalkeith college course move

A Midlothian MSP has asked the Scottish Parliament to condemn a political rival’s “scaremongering” over the removal of college courses from a Dalkeith campus.

SNP MSP Colin Beattie and Lothian Region MSP Kezia Dugdale (Lab) appeared to be singing from the same hymn sheet after Edinburgh College announced that it was moving courses in construction and joinery from its campus in Dalkeith to its Forthview campus in Granton, 13 miles away.

Mr Beattie had initially flagged up his own concerns that transport issues might deter people in Midlothian from signing up for the courses.

But while Ms Dugdale has tabled a motion at the Parliament calling for “a formal consultation to be carried out and for the results to be taken into account before a final decision is made,” Mr Beattie has put forward a separate one which praises the efforts being made by the college “to minimise disruption and improve standards of education.”
