New call over Bonnyrigg Rose car park saga

Bonnyrigg Rose Junior Football Club should not be forced to repay £26,000 it was awarded to improve its car park – according to a local councillor.

Councillor Ian Baxter (Green) believes that either the council or the Coalfields Regeneration Trust charity should “take a hit” by writing off the sum.

A grant to improve the New Dundas Park car park was approved in 2008 by Midlothian Council, which manages the Gourlaw Coal Regeneration Community Fund. It was made on the basis that the club would attract 50 per cent match funding.

As reported in last week’s Advertiser, the results of an internal audit investigation have found that the car park, in its present state, is “not fit for purpose”.

The council’s Audit Committee has ruled that the cash should be recovered unless the work is carried out to the standard required.

But Councillor Baxter, who campaigned for a probe into how the work was financed, is calling for the debt to be written off.
