A MIDLOTHIAN high school has been picked for a twinning project to develop its links in South Africa.

Newbattle Community High School has been selected in the UK government education initiative – ‘Connecting Classrooms’ – in recognition of its commitment to physical education and global issues.

In recent years Newbattle has forged strong links with Khanya Lesedi High School near Johannesburg.

Connecting Classrooms will enable Newbattle PE teachers Suzi Fegen and Bob Foley to take part in an exchange visit with the African school in May.

They will deliver PE and dance lessons to 1,200 pupils, as well as providing staff training in physical education at Khanya Lesedi and nearby primary schools.

They will also help to implement a pupil council at Khanya Lesedi modelled on the ‘Newbattle Pupil Voice’ system, which allows students greater input into school life.
