Newbattle school site could cost extra £12m
Newbattle High School, built in 1969, but soon to be replaced
Locating the new Newbattle High School in the middle of the three communities it serves would cost an extra £12 million.
Since the funding from Holyrood was confirmed in September the biggest question mark over the new build has been its location.
Midlothian Council put forward two preferred sites – Easthouses playing fields, council-owned land across the road from the current school, and Crawlees Road, situated in the middle of the three catchment areas but on private land.
The latter appears to have gained public support but news of the extra cost could dent those hopes.
During a Facebook question and answer session on the new school last Friday, Councillor Lisa Beattie (SNP), cabinet member for education, revealed that it would cost £12m to buy the land and create the infrastructure required, provoking a barrage of angry responses from supporters of that option.
