Parents bang drum for music

A last ditched attempt to reinstate music tuition for youngsters has been made – as the first wave of pupils to lose out prepare to return to school.

Earlier this year, Midlothian Council announced plans to phase out one-to-one music tuition over the next three years, by restricting it to pupils currently learning to play an instrument, saving 48,125 in 2010/11 and 125,125 in 2011/12.

Concerns

But the situation has prompted action from Dalkeith's King's Park Parents' Forum, which is to meet with the local authority to discuss its concerns.

The forum's petition – which aims to challenge the decision – has been backed by many parents with pupils at Mauricewood Primary, Penicuik.
