Park and stay at Straiton?

TRAVELLERS who have set up camp at the park and ride at Straiton face possible legal action.

The group have effectively closed the facility by taking up much of the car park and Lothian Buses has stopped using the site until the matter can be resolved.

The travellers were served with an eviction notice on Monday which gave them until Tuesday afternoon to leave the site.

However, should the notice be ignored, Edinburgh City Council, which runs the site, can apply for a court order which would allow police to take action to move the travellers on.

Until the area is cleared of the 20 or so caravans currently occupying it, Lothian Buses has closed its ticket office and buses are not operating from the site.

A notice to customers on the company's website said: "To avoid risk to our staff and passengers, Straiton Park and Ride (including the ticket office) will be closed until further notice. Police are involved and we will return to the site when it is safe to do so."

A spokesman told the Advertiser that several incidents in the past week had prompted the move.

He claimed: "Unfortunately the travelling people have been a bit intimidating to our drivers and passengers so we decided not to operate buses in there. We certainly don't want to put our staff or passengers at risk. Buses are still going along the main road so passengers who want to use the facility can."
