Penicuik benefits from faster broadband

More than 7,000 homes and businesses in Penicuik now have access to faster broadband, BT has announced.

The town is among the latest places in the country to benefit from the roll-out of BT’s next generation broadband service, delivered over copper lines.

The BT investment makes available download speeds of up to 20 megabits per second (Mbps) – more than double the speed previously available from BT.

The faster technology is already available in Dalkeith and Loanhead, meaning more than 32,000 local homes and businesses are now served by an upgraded exchange.

Midlothian’s strategic services spokesman Councillor Russell Imrie said: “This is splendid news for Penicuik. Our aim in Midlothian is to grow the economy and create up to 10,000 new jobs by 2020, and any hi-tech infrastructure which makes it easier for businesses and people to communicate with actual and potential customers in local, national or global markets is very welcome.”

This investment in the copper network is in addition to BT’s £2.5 billion roll-out of fibre-based broadband, which will bring even faster speeds by the end of 2014. Penicuik is also included in the fibre programme, as are Dalkeith and Gorebridge.
