Penicuik fire station's £400,000 extension opens
Penicuik now has extra firefighters thanks to a new £400,000 extension.
The new-look facility at Loanburn Avenue was officially opened on Friday, November 14.
The fire station has been home to a team of retained (part-time) firefighters, who all live and work up to five minutes away, since 1969.
A Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service review decided to boost staffing numbers at the one-pump station.
It sees the arrival of seven whole time firefighters, who will be based at the station from Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. In all, there are now 20 firefighters.
Group manager Iain Gray explained that, in addition to fighting blazes, crews were also focusing on fire prevention and protection by giving members of the public safety advice and fitting free smoke detectors.
Mr Gray added that thanks to the new set up at Penicuik, the firefighters were able to target high risk as well as rural areas of Midlothian.
The new-look fire station features a fitted kitchen, gym equipped with cross trainer, free weights and rowing machine, new male and female shower blocks, and muster area.
If you would like a home safety check to reduce the risk of fire in your home, contact Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service on 0800 169 0320.
