PEOPLE affected by the new housing benefit under-occupancy charge need to plan ahead, according to Midlothian Council.

The new under-occupancy charge comes into force from April 1.

Part of UK government welfare reforms, the changes mean some people of working age currently receiving housing benefit being asked to pay the new charge if their home is deemed to be too big for them.

The penalty for non-payment of the charge could be as severe as losing tenancy.
