Public to have say on future of Bonnyrigg Leisure Centre

Residents fighting the planned demolition of Bonnyrigg Leisure Centre have launched a Facebook page to gauge public opinion on what should be done with the building.

Objectors would like to see it preserved in its entirety, but Bonnyrigg and Sherwood Community Development Trust want Midlothian Council to pull part of it down.

Situated at King George V Park, the original building houses a swimming pool, while a modern extension has been added to provide a back hall for community use and other facilities.

The Trust has designs to take over the ownership of the building, but only after an older section, which is in a state of disrepair, has been dismantled.

Trust chairman Anne Elliot explained: “We would like to create a soft play facility and have been in consultation with Midlothian Council with a view to taking over the back hall. We’re still at the negotiating stage and would need a structural report on the building.”

Residents opposed to the plan, including local men Darius Namdaran and Paul Glynn, are asking that the building be given a 12-month stay of execution.
