Pupils get tour of their new school

Hopefield Primary pupils have been given a taste of the future during a tour of their new Burnbrae Primary in Bonnyrigg.

The three youngsters will be among around 200 children moving from the old Hopefield Primary to the state-of-the-art facility in Midlothian after the October holiday.

The new Burnbrae Primary School has capacity for 480 pupils, more than double that of the current Hopefield.

There are now 15 freshly-painted and furnished classrooms, a nursery and an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) provision.

The building also includes an assembly/sports hall, an expressive arts and an outside, 3G multi-use games area.

Councillor Lisa Beattie (SNP), cabinet member for education, said: “We are absolutely delighted the school is on time and on budget. It is a great learning environment for the pupils. I know I am really looking forward to the opening and I’m sure the pupils and staff are just as excited.”

The Burnbrae building has been designed to achieve a BREEAM very good rating, a comprehensive and widely recognised measure of a building’s environmental performance.

The school was delivered by Taylor Wimpey East Scotland as part of its new housing development at Hopefield.

The design was developed in partnership with Midlothian Council and the project was constructed by Ashleigh Scotland Ltd.

Staff will start moving into the new school from October 11 and pupils will start at the school on October 24.

The school logo is now a kite (to signify the old school motto of ‘Flying High at Hopefied’), a unicorn (for fulfilling pupils’ dreams) and an oak tree (the council’s logo).
