Royal seal of approval for MIdlothian scientists

Ground-breaking research being carried out by Midlothian scientists has received a royal visitor.

Last week the Princess Royal made her first visit to Roslin Institute since it was incorporated with the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies at Edinburgh University.

The Princess, who is patron of the Dick Vet, visited laboratories last week. Her Royal Highness was greeted by university principal Professor Sir Timothy O'Shea before being introduced to the institute's director Professor David Hume.

She heard about plans for institute's to move to a 60 million building on the university's Easter Bush campus.

During the visit the Princess Royal also learned about pioneering work involving the manipulation of genes to create chickens resistant to infectious diseases.

It is hoped that this approach will lead to development of chickens resistant to avian influenza infection.
