'Scandal' over Dalkeith High School's future

THE Culture Secretary, Fiona Hyslop, has called for Historic Scotland to review its opposition to the demolition of the former Dalkeith High School.

Midlothian Council wants to demolish the Newmills Road buildings, but Historic Scotland says part of the B-listed buildings should be protected because of architectural and historical merit.

Dalkeith Councillor Alex Bennett said: "This is a scandal, what's happened to Dalkeith High School. It is not a historic building. The reason it's not fit for purpose is because it's riddled with asbestos.

"We are spending 132,000 a year on security when we are making other cuts."
