School decision expected to close Mayfield, Newtongrange and Gorebridge facilities

Newbattle Community High School will soon be replaced

Newbattle Community High School will soon be replaced

Concerned members of three Midlothian communities packed Council Chambers this morning over fears they could lose local facilities.

As part of the process for the £25-30 million Newbattle High School replacement, councillors agreed to controversially begin community consultations over the potential loss of eight local facilities within the three main areas that serve the school - Mayfield, Newtongrange and Gorebridge.

Council officers warned in their report to councillors that these local facilities will no longer be sustainable and should therefore be centralised to Newbattle High School’s replacement building, expected in 2016.

The local amenities in the firing line are Newtongrange Library, Newtongrange Leisure Centre, Newbattle Pool, Newbattle Community Learning Centre, Gorebridge Leisure Centre, Gorebridge Library, Mayfield Leisure Centre and Mayfield Library.

Following the local consultation a final decision is expected to be made in June.
