SOLDIERS based in Midlothian are preparing to take “a pivotal role” in boosting security in Afghanistan.

Around 350 soldiers from Glencorse Barracks are heading to Helmand Province for a six-month operational tour.

The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2SCOTS) are part of Task Force Helmand, commanded by the British Army’s 1 Mechanised Brigade.

The soldiers will take on a variety of roles, including advising and training the Afghan national security forces.
