Tesco criticised over treatment of Penicuik pupils.

Supermarket giant Tesco has been accused of having no "social conscience" following its "scandalous" treatment of a group of Penicuik pupils.

Beeslack Community High School received a 20 donation from the store after 160 students carried out a clean up in Beeslack Woods.

But there has been anger in the local community at the level of support after the teenagers removed three Tesco shopping trolleys from the local burn.

Not a charity

In an initial response, Tesco told the Advertiser that it "was not a charity".

A spokesman said: "They have donated to this cause and respect what the children are doing but the budget is limited.

"We do have people at the store who are paid to get the trolleys.

"The store receives hundreds and hundreds of requests. They have to make it fair."

Shocking

Chris Leavy, Penicuik Community Council's new environment convenor, said: "Tesco said they would provide funding for the school children to help.

They got 20 from Tesco for 160 children. It is absolutely shocking," he said.
