The high cost of drinking in Midlothian
Alcohol-related harm led to £4.84 million being spent on social care in Midlothian last year.
As reported last week in the Advertiser, data collected on the back of a Scottish Government study suggests a total of £44.54 million may have been spent in 2010/11 as a result of alcohol issues in the county.
In the area of crime, £10.57m was spent, while the cost to the health service was £3.44m.
Almost £5m was spent on social care. Those costs are calculated based on the estimated level of social work caseload due to problem alcohol use, community service orders and probation orders related to alcohol, and care home expenditure for people with alcohol addictions.
