ENQUIRIES to install a wind turbine near an historic Midlothian castle have provoked local anger.

Acting on behalf of First Milk Energy Farms, Renewables Unlimited have received pre-application advice from Midlothian Council on plans for a 42m-high turbine near the A-listed Crichton Castle and B-listed Crichton Kirk.

The council recommended a landscape assessment of the impact on those nearby listed buildings, citing ‘highly sensitive concerns’.

Archie Pacey from Gorebridge Community Council said such a plan would harm local efforts to increase tourism.

He added: “We have got to be quite careful about giving planning permission for wind turbines, especially if they are in sensitive positions, and this to me is a sensitive position.

“There is a serious attempt to attract visitors to that area – and to put turbines there doesn’t seem like a sensible idea.”

Renewables Unlimited declined to comment on what they plan to do next.
