What future for Midlothian’s school leavers?

Leaving school with a bright future?

Leaving school with a bright future?

Steps are being taken to improve the prospects of Midlothian’s school leavers.

Representatives from Midlothian Council, local businesses, employment and training agencies and education providers met in Bonnyrigg last week to examine ways of tackling the issue.

The talks were described by one business leader as “positive”, with all parties anxious to work together to create more opportunities.

The Advertiser revealed last month that Midlothian had come bottom of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas when it comes to the success of its school leavers.

Figures compiled by Skills Development Scotland showed that, on average, 89.9 per cent of school leavers in the country were in work, training, further education or other activities. In Midlothian, the figure was 85.4 per cent.

The statistics set alarm bells ringing across Midlothian.

In next week’s Advertiser (March 14) we’ll be asking if, as a county, we’re letting our younsters down? Add your comments below or take part in our survey, right.
