Calls have been made for more ambulance resources in Dalkeith, after a woman died in a house fire.

Mary Mackie died as a result of smoke inhalation last Tuesday after her two-storey cottage at Suttieslea Road, Newtongrange, went up in flames at around noon.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus to rescue the 65-year-old, who was in a kitchen area of the two-storey cottage. She was treated at the scene by fire service personnel, but died later in hospital.

It has emerged that an ambulance was sent to the incident from Edinburgh – despite the local station in Dalkeith being situated just 100 yards away.

Speaking to the Advertiser this week, a man claiming to be an ambulance service dispatcher of 12 years said the station was regularly unmanned, and that this was putting lives at risk.
