Yes/no vote is hailed by Midlothian Council
Midlothian Council has welcomed the decision that the referendum on Scottish independence will be decided by a straight yes/no vote.
A Labour Group motion, put to last week’s full council meeting, argued that the timing of the referendum should be determined by the Scottish Parliament in conjunction with the UK Government.
However, the council’s SNP Group opposed this latter section of the motion, countering that the timing was a matter for the Scottish Parliament.
Councillor Owen Thompson (SNP) said: “I take issue with the motions final five or six words. I think we quite happily leave the timing to be determined by the Scottish Parliament, and it is ultimately for the Scottish people to make. I don’t think it has to be made by the UK Government.”
