After just over a year of construction work on the Borders Railway line the people of Midlothian are beginning to see the project come alive, with new bridges and tunnels springing up across the county.

From the temporary diversion of the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass, to the preparation work for the Hardengreen roundabout, masonry work on the Lothianbridge Viaduct and the installation of a new bridge over the A7 at Gore Glen, BAM construction and Network Rail have been busy this year as they head towards the summer 2015 completion date with confidence.

North of the Edinburgh city bypass the project team has had to create new roads and a completely new track alignment, as well as facing the challenges of working in a heavily mined area.

When it re-opens in the autumn of 2015 trains will travel through Midlothian for the first time since 1969 when the historic Waverly line was closed as part of a wider series of cuts to British railways.

Network Rail communications manager Sarah Duignan is happy with the progress being made as the line makes its comeback.

She said: “We currently have around 1,000 people working on the project at the moment. That’s us getting to the peak of the construction.
“But in the winter certainly the earthworks will scale back a bit as the earth will be frozen. A lot of the earthworks have been completed already. There will be some to do in the spring but nowhere on the scale of what has been done so far.
“We hope to be onto laying the track by next summer.”
