Bonnyrigg’s weekly market has come to an end – after serving the local community for almost 40 years.
Lesley Maby from the market operator Spook Erections, told the Advertiser: “The overhead costs were getting too expensive.”
She said that her firm reached a “mutual agreement” with the High Street site owner to end the lease, after unsuccessful efforts were made to reduce the market’s rates. The company has surrendered its licence and has no plans to trade elsewhere in the town.
The market opened in July 1975 and, according to Mrs Maby: “It was much busier in those days. It’s been a shame – the decline.”
