A flurry of new businesses at a local retail park will go some way to creating a top shopping destination, it was claimed this week.

Nike opened a branch at Straiton Retail Park last week, and Matalan and Sofaworks will be joining the sports giant in the coming months.

A £7 million investment programme in shop frontages and car parking by owner Peel Holdings is nearing completion.

Asset/development manager Kevin Keigher told the Advertiser: “We recognised it is a key destination for Midlothian and it was in need of some investment.

“We pursued an initial package of works which included refurbishment of half of the upper terrace and approximately one-third of the car park. That was completed in November 2012.

“We were then aware we needed to progress that refurbishment and we instructed (the contractor) to complete the residual refurbishment work and all the car parking areas as well as hard and soft landscaping. That is due to be completed in May this year.”
