Pupils and staff discuss the challenge with business people based at the Edinburgh Technopole

Midlothian secondary school pupils are to put the appliance of science to good use in the community as part of a major new competition.

S1 to S3 students from all six high schools are being invited to take part in the Edinburgh Technopole Challenge.

Recently launched at the Technopole, the contest will encourage pupils to use science and technology skills to complete a series of challenges.

The teams must come up with a solution to at least one of five challenges. Each task will give the students a better understanding of the technology sector as well as improving their problem-solving skills.

The tasks are – increasing community recycling; helping the elderly in Midlothian make better use of technology; raising awareness of the county; developing a way to help young people to learn more about conservation; and developing a product to help people in Midlothian.
