Plans have been announced to close Wellington Special School, which lies south of Penicuik, in June next year.
The City of Edinburgh Council expects to save £1.2 million by closing the residential facility and moving the boys to Gorgie Mills Special School.
Consultation now take place with parents, students and staff over the coming months.
At present, the school has 23 pupils. Twelve are expected to leave in December and a further four in May.
The current annual cost of services at Wellington is £2.252m.
