Some £400,000 is to be diverted to buy properties to re-home residents evacuated from gas-hit Newbyres Crescent in Gorebridge.

Midlothian Council will spend cash from the Housing Revenue Account to purchase homes in the Gorebridge area for use as council housing.

The money had previously been set aside to buy homes at Wester Cowden in Dalkeith.

Council leader Owen Thompson (SNP) said: “We have always said we will do what we can for residents there [Newbyres]. I certainly welcome this move.”
