A major health scare for his daughter has encouraged a Woodburn man to tackle Everest Base Camp to raise funds for cancer care charities.

Having served in the army with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for seven years, Gulf War veteran Gordon MacIvor (45) is prepared for most of what life throws at him.

But when doctors discovered a 12 x 6in cyst growing inside his 13-year-old girl’s stomach, he feared the worst.

Dalkeith High pupil Emma was rushed to hospital where surgeons successfully removed the cyst, which had twisted itself around her ovary. Although relieved, Gordon’s thoughts immediately turned to children who have been less fortunate.

It was then that the salesman of Primrose Crescent, decided to take on the mother of all challenges.
