E-cigarettes to remain in Midlothian pubs – for now

Members of Midlothian Licensing Board met recently to discuss banning the use of e-cigarretes in licensed premises.

The suggestion, which was considered at the request of The Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland, resulted in members agreeing to take national guidance before making a decision.

Councillor Alex Bennett (Lab) told the meeting: “I have no problem with people smoking e-cigarettes in pubs or clubs. A lot of my friends now use them instead of cigarettes – it’s encouraging them to stop smoking.

“The National Health Service says that smoking e-cigarettes can drive people to smoking actual cigarettes but in fact it has the opposite effect and I don’t see why we should ban them.”
