Midlothian Council is “hopeful” that the subsidence hit Old Dalkeith Road will be reopened by the end of March.
The commuter road has been closed at Lugton since July 2012, when large cracks appeared on its surface.
In January last year, Councillor Bob Constable (SNP), the then cabinet member with responsibility for roads, said that the council was ready to “fast-track” the repair works.
Twelve months on and the council has conceded that the likelihood of seeing the road reopened by the end of March will be “weather dependent”.
A spokesman said: “Once the main construction works started in June 2013, the aim has always been to get the road reopened by the end of March.”
