Launching our ‘Give us a Hub’ campaign on May 15, we challenged local politicians to improve community facilities in Dalkeith.
Colin Beattie, SNP MSP for Midlothian, sent us this response:
“Firstly I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Midlothian Advertiser for raising this issue. Dalkeith is sorely lacking in community facilities, and I agree that steps should be taken to reverse this state of affairs.
“The Advertiser’s campaign is a positive step and I fully support its stance. One concern, as the Advertiser notes, is the actual location of such a facility.
“There is a serious difficulty in identifying appropriate sites – however, it seems to me the obvious solution is the old Dalkeith High School. “This site has much more potential than any other option and can clearly give us the advantages we’re looking for.
What do you think is the answer to Dalkeith’s woes? Email us your ideas on what facilities are needed and where a community hub could be located.
“The School could amply provide ease of access and parking thanks to its locality, and the size of the site would easily allow for everything we require in a community facility – there is plenty of space for creative groups, and both a football pitch, and multi-use games area could be installed. “Dalkeith has been neglected for far too long; we now have a chance to give something back to the community.
“I would suggest the Council sets up a trust to run the new hub at the School site, and installs facilities such as those above to ensure the hub is future-proof.
“We will then be taking positive steps to restoring Dalkeith to its rightful place as a centre of community and creativity.”
