A gymnastics coach who set up clubs across the county was overwhelmed to receive a British Empire Medal for 50 years’ service to the sport.

Retired PE teacher Maggie Bisset (63) from Newlandrig near Gorebridge was nominated for the honour by Meadowbank Gymanastics Club – which Maggie founded in 1971.

She also started clubs in Danderhall, Mayfield and Gorebridge.

She said: “I’m really delighted and very surprised.

“A letter came in the middle of November marked ‘Cabinet Office’, I thought I had been called up for court!

“But after reading it I had to keep checking it. I couldn’t believe it. I still haven’t taken it in. I’m really delighted, it’s quite overwhelming actually.

“People have been lovely about it, I’ve had lots of people congratulating me in calls and emails.”
